Sealer Color for Red

I am painting a hood viper red. I have always been told to use white as sealer color underneath reds and yellows. Is this correct? If so, then why not use red sealer when painting red?

The tech manual says to use a white sealer under reds and oranges. As far as using a red sealer, I could only guess that it would darken the base red, possibly, but I doubt that would matter if you get enough coats on there (3)?

Anyway, point I'm making is that, yes, white sealer is what is mentioned in the tech manual.

John that is a good looking car.:)

JC, Viper red will "pop" more with a white sealer than with a red sealer. Red sealer will darken it to an extent. Especially if the sealer is darker than the color. Yellows should almost always be used with a white sealer.

What Chris said.;)
I waterbourne paint at work, I've sampled a light/ medium red over white & grey. from a distance not side by side, it looks like the same color, but definitely looks more vibrant over white. Some say (or think) that red over a red or grey covers better when really you just need enough paint to get your true color.

3 coats of SPI Dark Red over a gray primer.
