Sealer Color For Dark Blue Metallic

So, top and bottom of the hood, top and bottom of the trunk lid, engine bay, trunk, two front fenders, two doors, top, two rear fenders makes 13 panels times 10 oz. per panel is 130 oz. or 1/2 gallon per coat or 65 oz. of base at a 1:1 ratio - two quarts. And I should figure on three coats? That's $1,500 for the base. Ho lee sh*t. I'll have to sell the car to buy the paint for it. I'd look into the Motobase but I've already bought one quart of the PPG DBC at $250 per quart to confirm it's the color I want. I did not realize it was going to be $250 when I ordered it.
Just be glad it's not a red pearl like the truck I have to fix. $400 per quart in DBC. Insane:eek: Actually, a gallon would be more than enough for the outside for 3 coats, but with door jambs, engine compartment, underside of trunk and hood, you would probably need at least 1 more quart. Like John Long and '68 suggested, just buy a gallon of Motobase and use the DBC for coverage under the hood and engine bay.

All complete, all Motobase. As long as that paint is available to me I wont use anything else. I've also done a ton of daily driver repair jobs with it and its worked out perfect.

My only issue with MotoBase is on the daily driver stuff im kinda screwed if I have to play with the color. I'd love to get my own bank!

If there is an explanation that can justify paying as much as $730 for a quart of paint I'm afraid it would be lost on me. All the photos of painted cars are impressive. I'm not expecting mine to be on that level.

I've sent an email to Chad requesting a price on the Motobase paint. I'll keep you posted.

they are not that impressive, all in how you take the photos!

as far as the price for that DBC. I can only imgaine its because technically its 2 quarts(tricoat) and because its a harley color! But the kit was only sold in quarts so now I have a bunch left over.

I believe PPG spends more money on factory reps and marketing than they do on making paint. They are after the production shops. They really don't care if you or I ever cast a shadow on their door.

From what I've heard PPG wants to end the DBC line and get everyone using their waterbased lines. But they can't because DBC is still very popular. So they raise prices to try and move everyone over to the WB. That and all the money they give some Shops like John said. Charley Hutton's place is basically paid for by PPG. Locally they put in a dedicated WB booth for one of the biggest Shops in the area and paid for half of it. I heard from a reliable source the booth cost was over $200K. Like John says they could care less about low volume users, be it individuals or small resto shops.
Personally I'm done with PPG.

i dont know about restoration colors, but i did collision repairing using ppgomni and omni plus line. and can’t tell anything bad about it. fine coverage, blendable match to factory color. used dbc couple of times and almost didnt see a difference. ye, slightly better coverage, if with omni plus u need 3 coats with dbc u can do it with 2 coats- thats about it.
however, some colors are pretty bad in coverage. for example: chrysler’s PRP, PRV reds- if you have a light grey color sealer, you are in a big trouble, and it will not cover in 6 coats, almost no matter what brand of paint you use- its a dbc or mipa or omni
the cromax website has an option to find the color by paint code and will give you the color shade for sealer- and i have white and black sealer, which i mix to get the right shade. after that, even omni will cover in 3 coats and you will get you base under 2 mils.

I used the restoration shop once for the lumina when the hood got bashed in. Their color match was real good, pretty watery though. They want you to spray dry, then half turn your liquid til you get to the fourth pass. They were in that massive TCP gloval site, if that was what you were referring to.
That Mipa stuff we found close by was really nice paint, he said he would mix our deep blue for the camaro for 3-400 a gallon. That was the Pewter GM thats on a bunch of 03 stuff loaded with metallic. Good part was our shop van is already that color and we will eventually be replacing the lower everything before someone gets cut so we have it for 2 vehicles.
