Primer basecoat wo,dow

New to the site. Have read a Lot of the threads regarding this question,but want to be sure on time from using epoxy primer used as sealer to time basecoat can be sprayed.
I sprayed the sealer yesterday with. Intention to spray the base afterward, but situation came up and I could not do so. Would like to spray base today. Would I need to wet sand sealer. It will have been 24 hours. All SPI products. Thanks.
 
The perfect paint job in the tech manuals says, after sealer, you can either lay base coat in 6 hours or another option is to wait until the next day, then wet sand with 400-800 grit and then shoot (pg 38). I just did this last weekend and it worked fine for me. It was only a test panel, but I put clear down and cut and buffed and haven't notice any problems (outside of the fact that I suck at cutting and buffing!).

Awesome, Thanks for the quick response. The car and it's parts stated sealer up in my garage pvc and plastic sheeting homemade spray booth.

Thanks for the response Chris. I saw that in the manual as well,but I've also seen alot of different answers on this forum.
I was hoping to save the wet sanding step if possible. Done enough sanding already if you know what I mean. I know there is more to come,just hoped to not have to do it this time.
 
I've been sanding for the last year...I'm ready to be done, so yes, I know what you mean. That amount of time is a game-changer for my planning, Barry. In a good way, so thanks!

Over the last 9 months i have been doing a lot of testing with different bases and learned a lot, your going to see some rules being modified in next tech manual and in the advice I give out.

I'm just to cautious and a perfect example is waterborne base, I have very-tight rules for clear being applied, I have gotten 100% adhesion two weeks later with no cleaning or sanding.

Have there been any new findings published relative to re-coat windows on epoxy sealer? I'm ready to shoot epoxy sealer at 1:1:.5 followed by Motobase base coat. I'm also spraying in a plastic walled "booth" in my garage. I'd like to shoot the epoxy one day then the base the next and the clear on the third day. Everything is SPI except the base.
 
joe in the case of motobase i would not let the epoxy sit for more than 24hrs unless its winter and the metal temps are low.
 
Is it safe to let the Motobase set for 24 hours before clearing it? Do you always wash the car between sanding and a coat of anything?
 
Joe if you need to wet sand the sealer, you can wipe down with either SPI 700 or SPI 710. If you do some nib sanding on your base, try and do it with gloves on. Try to not let your body (espesially bare skin) touch the base. If you need to wipe it down use the solvent based W&G remover. (SPI 710) Don't use the waterbased. Also don't get everything soaked. Put the cleaner on some clean prep wipes, wipe down then re-wipe with a clean dry prep wipe. Only wipe areas affected by your sanding. With base it's always best to nib dry with clean nitrile gloves on. Doing it that way you can simply use a tack cloth to clean the surface. Then blow it all off and re-tack. Don't let your clothes or skin come into contact with the base.
 
To be clear, I'm not talking about washing between coats of base or coats of clear. I've just finished sanding the high build with 600 grit and I'm ready to shoot the epoxy sealer. The car is covered in sanding dust. I should just blow it off, wipe it down and tack it? Not wash it first? I know I'm asking some dumb questions but the amount of knowledge needed to do this right is really challenging for a novice like me.

Sorry, Joe, I thought you were talking between basecoat and clear or between basecoats.
Yes clean primer with wax and grease remover.
