Mipa Paint

Btw... Good to know Wanda is top shelf as my dist supplies it. I always thought it was like Omni ...inexpensive.

Sorry except for name a lot of bs was feed to you.
You liked the tech base, ever sprayed probase plus? Yep

 Figures doesnt it.

Do you like Probase better than Wanda? Honestly, I never used any MS that I liked. Got a few cans still sitting around. Maybe I should reconsider?

I'm sorry my cell phone is taking away and changing words.
No nothing to do with ms.
U-tech was not a heavy polyester.
Have you tried auto base plus?
Wounder if it smells like old u-tech?
Yes on the prospray, if I bought a base line that would be the one.

Barry if you bought it I'd switch in a heartbeat. But something tells me you don't want the headache that a basecoat line would bring.;)

Does Akzo Nobel no longer make UTech polyurethane? I used some a few years ago and liked it, smells exactly like vintage Imron (but not as tough)! Was Wanda made as a replacement? Just wondering.

That was UTECH 3.8 and it was GREAT. Now it is replaced with U500 and it's OK. I'd spray it over Nason, Limco, or Omni single stage but it's no 3.8.

Well we're 6 months in with MIPA and no complaints yet. Still clearing with SPI UV Clear most of the time. Sometimes SPI Euro 2020. I am very hard to please and so for I'm happy. I've sprayed them all or darn near all. They all have their little nuances but MIPA to me is almost exactly like Glasurit. Pigment load is good, usually 2 coats. Some whites are a little weak (like Diamont and Glasurit). All toners are priced the same except one red. Liters are less than 80 bucks and gallons (3.75 liter I think) are just over 200 bucks. Like Diamont and Glasurit, every toner is ready to spray so no separate binder.

We actually have a Promax distributor less than 5 minutes away, and being in Chicago, you would think there would be more paint suppliers than there are. The 5 different brand including Wanda is not far in the other direction from home, just no parking and you walk into a store from 1960. Creaking hardwood floors, space heaters hanging overhead. We tried the sherwin williams for the red on the jimmy, just terrible match.
Anyway, we got the quart of Mipa in that tough GM Pewter for the Trailblazer we rewired for our winter use. I say tough because in bright sun its silver, overcast to dusk its gold. We fixed it so good mechanically now we have to do body work. Just had a stuck tailgate so the rear panel was ripped off, and the spoiler does not hold the third brake lite and a gas door replacement. 136 for a quart was a tough pill to swallow considering I usually get a gallon or more for that, but I guess I learned a lesson on you get what you pay for. Reading thru the search for Mipa, if that is cheaper, I guess I am glad I never tried the expensive stuff before. He said he will get us around 350 for a gallon if we do the camaro in the dark blue metallic over the winter again.

@Bartman
So are you satisfied still with it? Re-reading this it seems almost too good to be true if it's similar to Glasurit and Diamont. Like you those have long been two of my favorites. What about Distributors/Jobbers. I'm assuming there aren't any other than the place in New Jersey that imports it? Do you get your toners through the mail. Also who did you contact about getting the Mixing system into your Shop?

Chris, I'm sorry I'm just seeing this. I have not been on in a while. Anyway it does seem to good to be true but I was a Diamont shop for many years. The local Diamont jobber parted ways with my salesman and things went down hill and I ended up jumping around for years and sprayed nearly everything on the market. Liked most, hated some. Anyway I can't tell MIPA from Diamont or Glasurit. Most colors spray like Glasurit and hide in 2 coats. White is a poor hider like Diamont white. 4 coats. Maybe three but I like 4 light instead of 3 heavy. Anyway I'm over a year spraying it exclusively. Several jobs a week. Not a single issue, not one. We haven't fought one during spraying and had ZERO comebacks. The color docs are pretty good. Again, same as BASF, software provides a chip number and it's an actual spray out. Only issue is, if there is a code with a lot of alternates, say 6-8, maybe a couple don't have chips. But you can tell from what is chipped where you need to go. If the color only has an alternate or 2, they are almost always all chipped. Anyway, price has been consistent, it has not gone up significantly. I think gallons are up to $220 now from $212 over a year ago. I have a jobber that delivers once a week on Monday and if I get in a bind, they will overnight me from the warehouse in NJ.

I continue to use SPI primers and clears.

We mix from a bank and don't order pre-mixed. It's always higher if your jobber mixes it. Mixing 382E Pewter in MIPA is about 85 bucks for a quart. That's more than the low end stuff but this is NOT low end paint. This is as good as I've sprayed in 35 years I've been painting. If you like polyester basecoat. Some do, some don't. That's why some people like PPG and Sherwin. So that's around $350/gallon. Compared to $600 or more a gallon for PPG, BASF, etc. I think it's a good deal. You can't compare MIPA to Limco, Omni, etc. Apples and oranges.

Chris, im spraying mipa already for 5 years. i even had their mixing rack for couple years. the pricing is best, around 70$ a quart for cheap colors and 130$ is most expensive i had. coverage is meh, i would say same as a omni plus, and color match sometimes dead on and sometimes is far off(pw7 chrysler) but if i had to get any mixing rack in my shop, that would be mipa.

MIPA system here was 1500 bucks, toners, mix rack, lids, scale and chip book. MIPA was(is??) doing a factory promotion, jobber installed but the initial set up shipped from MIPA. I would definitely not mention MIPA and omni plus in the same sentence. I've been spraying for 35 years and not much I have not sprayed. Is MIPA perfect? It's not. None are. Is it on the line with Omni or Omni Plus, not in my opinion. It's almost a copy of BASF and not Limco. I've not had trouble matching factory PW7 but I did have trouble matching a PW7 that had been repaired and blended. Not really a MIPA problem. I'm a big BASF fan for color and this is right there. Some people just don't like polyester base. I have friends that hate BASF and they will likely hate MIPA. Most I know that don't like BASF base refuse to stop prepping with 400 grit like you can mostly get away with using acrylic bases. The trade off is texture in the base. BASF and MIPA have a very thin film build and near zero texture. Just my opinion and I've been told it ain't worth much....
