Iwata LPH400-144 LVX vs. the LV for Clear?

Hey all!

I'm learning as I go. Have shot a few panels and bobcats before using the good ol harbor freight guns. But Now restoring a 2004 Dodge ram. First up is the bed that needs some metal work and patch panels.

Ordered up some epoxy, some 2k regular build, and my Euro Clear so I am ready to go after the metal work.

I didnt want to spend all of this money and time getting the body perfect and then screwing up the paint using a sub par gun - so I went looking and have a pre owned Iwata LPH400 LVX on the way (orange cap), with the PPS system.

I plan on shooting the epoxy with the 1.4 orange LVX cap. Then getting a budget 1.8 primer gun for the 2K. I'll obviously be shooting my base with the Iwata. My question is the Euro Clear. If possible it would be nice to shoot it with the Iwata. But I find conflicting opinions on shooting clear with the LVX v/s the LV (silver) cap.

What says ye? Not looking for a show car finish - but would like it to be as nice as possible within my abilities. Would really be nice not to have to cut and polish the entire bed, just has to look "good".

Most everyone here recommends the silver cap for about everything. It's been discussed quite a few times if you want to search for it.

Hey Mitch! Yea, I have searched and found some discussion. But there does seem to be a mix of people with some saying the silver does everything well. And others saying the orange cap works well too, so I guess I was hoping we could get a little more discussion going. Obviously would love to not spend 130 bucks on the silver cap, but if its necessary, whats another 130 bucks. lol

Alright - so I guess I'll but the LV cap to shoot the clear. Dang. O well, still only paid 220 for the gun with gold cap and pps system (minus the liners). Guess I should of done a little more research first.

Maybe i'll epoxy and lay base with the gold cap, and just shoot clear with the LV.

Thanks for the help everyone! Any other tips are appreciated!

If you are going to have both caps, you may as well try both and see which works better for you. If you spray faster or slower than someone else, another cap may work better for you than someone else.

Try the cap you have, on a sample piece and see how it goes. Maybe it will work out, what do you have to lose, maybe you can save some money and use what you have.

I have used the LPH400 with the silver cap for years. Only recently went to a Tekna Copper and even then go back to the Iwata from time to time. Just sprayed some epoxy with it as a matter of fact.
The key to any spray gun is the set up. Getting the fluid, air and fan knobs right where they should be makes things much easier. From there you simply need to be consistent in distance from the panel, overlap and speed.

This hood was sprayed with the Iwata using SPI Euro Clear (unreduced). These pictures are straight out of the gun will no buffing:

If I can get half as good of a finish as that, I would consider it a success!

I use the Silver for most everything, but the purple base cap works great for
spraying small areas, like touch-ups with its much lower pressure.
