pearl,candy and flake

Any insight or tips needed. Have cool 70's Chrysler jet boat I will be throwing down some custom paint on. Some of the unknowns I have been researching are the multiple colors Of flake and pearls I will be utilizing. I will be basing the boat white for the underlying color and then adding three different colors of flake on bow top and sides. My initial thinking is to mix up like pearl colors to the respective flake color over that. Blue silver and copper are the flake colors. I have multiple pearl pigments in these three ranges. My biggest concern is taping out for these transitions with flake. This is 70's project so flake sizes are .015 to .025 and even a little .035 silver. So base, intercoat , pearl mixed with intercoat, intercoat, then flake in intercoat. At this point its my understanding I will have a textured surface. will this tape out for next flake color until all colors applied and then start pushing the clear or should I keep smashing intercoat between all this. Also thoughts on clear choice since this will be a boat. Used euro on a Century boat I just completed with good results. Would U C be better pick in this situation.

i personally think you should really rethink your process and what your trying to do. some of those flake sizes are big and you really need to avoid using intercoat as binder for stuff super thick and heavy. you cant build up intercoat clear like its 10 coats of regular clearcoat. generally you would get a nice heavy silver flake job down, clearcoat it, sand it smooth then if you want to add color or make colored flake then you do that all with candies over the silver flake. this way you can do fades and color changes, etc and also have nice clean and straight lines.

Thanks for that...I was going round and round with the tape off and shoot multiple colors of flake. The flake vendor indicated my 2.5 tip with intercoat would shoot the .015 and .025 flake. I was going to somehow dry flake the larger .035 in coats of clear. so test panels are in order here obviously. I assume after getting a good flow coat you would suggest using candies over the silver to get the color instead of pearl pigments. The one thing I have established is there is more than one way people approach this custom paint thing. And I don't think labels mean much to most of them...lol

pearls arent going to give you a ton of color. they are also not transparent so if you managed to put enough perl over the flake to make a color change then your just going to hide the flake. basically you need to get a nice flake base down, get it all smoothed out then your artwork goes over that. the artwork if you want to see the flake will need to be done in candies mixed into intercoat. a 2.5 is a masive tip. a primer gun with a 1.8-1.9 will shoot .025. i shoot .15 with a regular 1.4 no problem.

i'm going to use gold powder in intercoat then gold flake in uv clear. will block down smooth then do the candy red and other stuff followed by uv clear..

what is the gold powder you will be mixing? I was going to tint the colors under the flake to match them respectively with intercoat then clear.
