Backyard Hack
This one is ready to go home, I’ve taken it as far as planned. A lot of subtle body mods on this one. All SPI except Z-chrome Rust Defender and Dave Kindigs Modern Classikk Blue Suede Blue basecoat. Euro clear

Beautiful work there Don. Another show winner. I see you mentioning the Kindig colors again. Who are those through? Oh and it looks like you have a gorgeous place there as well.....and I'm jealous of your buildings too.:)

Thanks Chris. I have you and the other pros on here to thank for these results. Without the advice I get here I wouldn’t be able to do the work I enjoy.

I get the Modern Classikk base online here:
It’s AkzoNobel base and the quality and coverage is quite good. I used SPI reducer.

The main website is here:

I am thinking of trying the Cha Ching silver on my 56 Cameo if I can get the fiberglass bedsides straight enough. It looks like it flops dark, almost black.

That looks amazing. If you mind sharing the wet sand and buff techniques and materials you used? Wet sand by hand or machine? What compounds and pads.

Eagle yellow 1000, 1200, 1500 all dry on a 3M DA. I replace the disc often. Used quite a few discs but I prefer dry sanding.
Trizact 3000 wet then Trizact 8000 wet also on a 3M DA
ACA 500 with a Presta black wool pad
Menzerna 3 in 1 on a hexlogic green pad

I did have to hand block out some wave on the doors with 600 and 800 on a hard block. I got a little carried away spraying the clear... :>)

This method is based on the shared experience of the pros on this site.

This information is gold. I tried using a da 1500 2000 3000 once and ended up with alot of pig tails. It was dura gold paper (probably very low end) and a Chinese da....I'm looking to upgrade papers and equipment before the next job. (Black, currently in the poly.primer stage)

Well this is gold I mined on this site.

The key to reducing pigtails is to give it some time to harden in the sun and change the disc as soon as it starts to load up. It’s done at that point.

Yikes! That's some expensive paint.

Actually I don’t think the price is too bad - I painted a car in his “Redical”. $800 a gallon but it covers in 2 coats and a 3rd for good measure- of course it’s not a 1:1 mix...I’ve used some Omni plus that’s $600 and it covers like crap

Being that it's Akzo Nobel I would imagine it's Sikkens AutoColor base which is some of the best stuff out there.

Talked to a buddy (who is also an area PPG Rep) a couple of weeks ago and complained about how high DBC has gotten and he told me that they want to discontinue DBC and move everyone over to EnvironBase but DBC is still really popular and one of their best selling products. So they continue to raise the price of DBC in hopes of driving any remaining Shops using DBC to the Environbase. He flatly said that PPG could care less about small users even though they sell a lot of product to walk in and 1-2 job a year customers. Corporate Logic at work. o_O It's worked on me though. I don't plan on using it anymore unless I absolutely have to.

I have had no problem with coverage as long as I stay away from the bargain basement brands - Shopline, Omni, etc.
Used ProSpray for a while and then went to Automotive Art Motobase LV for anything SPI doesn't produce. Excellent coverage, mixes 1:1 and about 2/3s the price. Sometimes I have to have it mixed to the manufacturer's paint code.

Covers in two coats generally but I am one of those 3 coats minimum type guys.

Where do you order it from? The web site shows it in the north east but there was no way to search it, like by zip code for example.

This is cool info. One of those things I wonder about when watching Dave's show. Sometimes they mix up and eyeball some amazing colors until they get what they want. That is a perfect blue for that Camaro, nice work!
