Crazing.

What happened here? Only one panel did this and it is all along the body line about 1” wide the length of the door.... Automotive Arts base 2
coats UC

I'm lost on this one, all I can think of the body line may have had 1 coat equals 3 or 4 coats of either sealer or base, most likely sealer.
If this theory is right after sets over night it will lose about 50-75% of the texture.
Only reason i come up with this answer is 34 ford body lines do the same thing a lot.

All the panels had 3 coats of straight white epoxy that I blocked with 220 wet then 400 wet. There was little blocking on they doors as they were very straight and very little cratering. If I had to guess this area would have had the thickest layer of epoxy under it.

I will say I did have a lot of problems much like epoxy with the base. It wanted to crater a lot. We wiped the panels with 710 and let them dry out in the sun for an hour. I thought it was my daughter not doing a good job wiping so I re-wiped the remaining panels again and it did not make a lot of difference. I had to be very careful how much I put down at one time until I got a good base. Then the third coat I could put down the way you would like it to go on.

I'll know tonight better (leave before sun up for work). I do know after a few hours I took my daughter out in the garage later that night to look at it after she got home. In the florescent lighting I was puzzled why it was so hard to see it... Maybe your right it was starting to loose the texture and it was not the crappy lighting.

What should I do sand it back down to the epoxy or wet sand it and hit it with a bit more base and reclear?

If it shrinks back like you say all you need to do is wetsand smooth, that means the epoxy had not released enough solvents yet and no harm done as the base drew them out.

Now I'm learning something! Thanks Barry.
So that is actually wrinkling in the epoxy? That's actually not cracking in the paint film?

Not cracking, both to a degree swell, the best i can tell with the majority of it showing is the base as the base can't get rid of all the solvents and don't like certain ones also, I have dissected this may times and best i can guess what is happening.
So as the solvent leave the base it lays down and many times the next day there is no evidence at all that it even happened.
With clear on it, that changes everything, most common for this to happen is bumpers as they tend to be rushed.

Got a look this morning before I left. Not sure it looks any better. It does seem like the base did crack. The Clear is flat and not lifted. Should I sans it all the way down or just wet sand and shoot a bit more base?

i have had this . sealed with reduced epoxy but a little light . came back with base wet and it did the exact thing . base reducer got under the epoxy .

Damn, that's scary guys... Jim said it was the thicker area of epoxy.

Yea I did not use the epoxy as just a sealer layer. It was three good coats heavy coats that I blocked out..... BUT what could have happened is on the body line I sanded it a bit thin. I do know that I could see the dark grey 2k ghosting through the white epoxy on some of the body line corners....... Maybe that is what is going on......

Thanks Shine, so is the bond in question now if that is what it is? It did not die back, still looks about the same. I wet sanded it smooth. Can I just shoot more base and re-clear?

At this point could be a number of things and could be anyone of the above guesses.
Why just one panel something is different.

Jim, how long had the epoxy dried before you based? And how long did the base dry before you cleared? Did this problem occur after clear?

The epoxy was sprayed and sat in the sun for around 4 hours. We moved it into the garage where it stayed about 70 overnight. Pulled it back outside the next morning and wet sanded with 220 and a block to get the trash and peel out then wet sanded with 400 to get the 220 scratches out. Wiped with 710 and it sat for well over an hour. Struggled with the cratering of the base for the body and panels but finally got it on. Barry said I could clear 15 minutes to 48 hours over the AA base so it was likely over an hour before I got to that panel. I did not notice it when I sprayed the UC but it is actually difficult to see it unless you are in the light just right so I don't know if it was like that before the UC. I noticed it after I cleaned up and started walking around the panels putting pieces of tape on areas that needed attention later that day.
