let's talk sanding

i used a combo of orange foam and wool. wool being a little faster i guess but also doesnt leave as nice of a finish. its a little more swirly

Quick question is the 3M dry discs sanding before buffing better and they last longer then the eagle abrassives dry,, i know 3m on the 1000,1500 wet suucks... i have a few guys who are twlling me 3m is superior in performance and durability on the dry system i never try the dry 3m system

Last I tried about a month ago I'd say NO, Eagle Abrasives still last longer and cut smoother than the 3M discs, wish I had the 3M part number to clarify and back up my observations.

The guy is saying dry works better on wet they suck,,,i know eagle abrassive have good reviews over the 3m but this guys says he try both head to head dry and wet and 3m is better tgats why im trying to get more info on this i switch to eagle 1000,1500,2000 yellow and green/black 2500 and 4000

IMHO you should take a close look at what JimC recommends on page 5 of this thread. His latest findings was using Eagle yellow dry 1000 and then jumping to Tolex 193-1503 wet, it's a pink disk that will be equivalent to 2000, then start with a wool pad then follow with your preferred foam cutting pad. Two sanding steps and you're done, compare that to all the steps we have been discussing before, so it's worth a try from a convenience and even money wise point.

The only way you will know for sure what works is trying it yourself, we all work under different environments and that may play into it as well.

The 3M dry 1000 I tried and it took a long time before the disk started to cut, the first 30 seconds or even longer it just spins like it's doing nothing and then finally starts to cut, it seemed to last a decent time, but to me, at low RPMS and light pressure with the DA it seemed to leave a coarser finish than the Eagle stuff, that set me up for pig tail city and a longer time trying to 'erase' the first cut with 3M, you may find different results than me.

Now if you gave me those 3M disks for prepping metallic paint jobs I'd be extremely happy with them, because they do last quite a while, but for buffing I didn't like their sanding finish.

Last quick buffing job I had to do was with Eagle 1000 dry, then the new Norton 1500 6" used wet, then a quick pass with Norton black ice 2000 wet by hand.

Started buffing with Meguiars burgundy wool pad and Menzerna 300, then switched to Chemical guys orange foam pad and Menzerna 400 and was done, this was on a F150 UG darkish gray color, nothing fancy, no mirror restoration finish stuff, just a clean polish job that matched the small factory peel and I couldn't find any damn pigtails anywhere, it was a really good better than factory finish.

yeah no mater what brand you go with always do your first cut dry. its the only way you can see when all the peel is out and you have a smooth finish. from there you are just refining the sand scratch finer and finer and that should be done wet. NEVER use those 3m purple 1500 trizact clearcoat sanding discs. you will destroy your paint with those things. for 3m the only this used wet is the trizact foam discs. for eagle you can use tolex and bufflex wet even though they say dry. the eagle system is by far way better and cheaper than the 3m system but both will work.

I know you use the tolex (pink) do these come PSA or can i use the hook soft 3m pad ..want to try these one wet after the yellow 1000.

My procedure is orange, then tolex ,all super assilex is hook it, when I'm cutting and buffing dark colors I use the Tolex wet also.

tolex is Velcro and should be used on a soft interface pad. 3m or any other brand is fine. yellow film 1000 dry then tolex wet then green bufflex wet is the way to go!! if you want to go farther or on hard finishes then black bufflex or 3m 5000 trizact

Have you try it with the yellow and tolex ?
If you have heavy orange peel start with Lemon ,orange, tolex ,the cut that lemon makes is like 800 but finishes like 1000 and stay with their system you will love it ,most of the time I use lemon for for prepping a blend ,you can't beat the cut.

ahhh yes not sure if he was speaking of the lemon or the yellow film. when I use or hear yellow I mean the yellow film super tack discs. those cut the peel flatter and are run dry so you can see what your doing BUT the assilex is done wet and last a lot longer than the yellow film discs.

Yea sorry,i was talking about the the super tack yellow.
Want to try
Super-tack yellow 1000 dry
Tolex pink wet
Buflex green wet
When i need to buflex black wet and 3m 5000.

Quick question on the buflex green and black.
Do the green is between 2000 and 2500 grit, same for black between 3000 and 4000?
Tolex is between 1500 and 2000.

yes that's about right for the grits.

Today I buffed the side of a Lincoln truck, black base with about a week old Euro 5100. Started with the Eagle yellow 1000 dry, then I tried to do the 1500 yellow wet, it was a no go, I either was using too much water or those discs with their dry lubricants don't like water, it was just gliding over the panel not cutting worth a crap, very slick surface feeling.

Then by chance this shop had some of the new Norton dry ice discs, 1500 and used it wet, it worked pretty decent. After that I did the Tolex pink disk wet, then bufflex black wet because I forgot to bring the green ones.

All buffing was done with Menzerna stuff, it turned pretty good in the end.

I guess I'll have to experiment from going 1000 dry to the Tolex wet with nothing in between and try to make it work every time. Practice practice and then more practice lol.
